ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a framework of cybersecurity literacy or a “cybersecurity mindset” in adult education. The cybersecurity mindset is as a way of (1) understanding cyberspace and an individual’s roles in establishing trust, (2) managing risk, (3) thinking like an adversary, and (4) using ethical reflection and judgment, all of which are essential abilities to be literate in cyberspace. We argue that adults can engage in systematic and sustained activities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values encompassed within these four facets thus developing well-grounded literacy in cybersecurity. The four dimensions of cybersecurity mindset are explored through an example of misinformation and disinformation demonstrating how cybersecurity exists within the context of social, organizational, political, and personal values. Developing a cybersecurity mindset as a critical literacy equips adult learners with the knowledge and tools to critically engage in cyberspace, as well as do so safely and securely.
