ABSTRACT

The successful pediatric acute care occupational therapist is one who uses clinical reasoning in the determination of evaluation, setting goals and intervention approaches within the fast-paced hospital setting. This chapter illustrates the manner in which therapists in a pediatric hospital setting can and should incorporate principles of sensory integration into their professional practice in order to support patient outcomes. This chapter discusses how the provision of direct interventions based on sensory principles in combination with other approaches can facilitate more effective outcomes for patients admitted to the hospital setting. It also challenges the reader to consider how to modify and adapt sensory environments to support patient progress.
