ABSTRACT

Therapeutic interventions for children with hemiplegia include intense delivery of repeated movement practice to improve individual-specific goals and spontaneous bimanual use (i.e., Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, Hand Arm Bimanual Intensive Training, and forced use). The validity of the Kid Power Program was established over 3 years of data collection and program evaluation using the Assisting Hand Assessment and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. Evidence supports that one-handed training followed by bimanual training enhances UE capacity. Camp Kid Power uses bimanual training to build upon the unimanual skills acquired with forced use in phase one. The Kid Power Program is a culmination of knowledge from research and clinical foundations blending forced use, intensive bimanual training, and Sensory Integration principles to improve UE bimanual function for children with hemiplegia. The program continues to evolve with annual evaluation and modification using feedback from therapists, clients, and their families, outcome results, updated research evidence, and adjusting to circumstances such as those experienced during the pandemic.
