ABSTRACT

It was once a very widely held view that there was no caste based discrimination in the higher-educational institutions especially in the so called centres of excellence. However the growing number of suicides of students in these institutions has proved beyond any doubt that there exists caste based discrimination. This paper seeks to present case studies of students who committed suicides due to discriminatory decisions taken by institutions against Dalit students taking the case of University of Hyderabad. It also strives to suggest certain measures to be adopted by the state and the institutions concerned to reduce if not eliminate caste-discrimination from the campuses of higher educational institutions.
