ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the potential contributions of a neurosemiotic perspective on interoception – the process by which the nervous system senses, interprets, and integrates afferent information about our body’s internal states. We review how existing research on interoception and predictive processing may address questions posed within neurosemiotics regarding the nature of intra- and inter-personal signaling. This work illustrates why a fully biological approach to semiotics cannot limit itself to signs external to the body, and how signals generated from within the body can be analyzed from a neurosemiotic stance.
