ABSTRACT

The very making of digital objects is part of a framework of varied uses and access across contexts and funding models, and at no point is it free of a politics of cultural critique. The quality of digital media to cross reference and multiply is manifested in an immediate expansion of activism, research and artistic publications. In this spirit, the element of outreach that Joyoti Roy’s account speaks of underlines the need to engage wider publics and diverse audiences. Curation and design are integral to encouraging and acknowledging diversity, and Souvik Mukherjee’s chapter also aims to think through the key issues that are relevant to the various DH pedagogical programmes in Indian academia in comparison with global DH programmes. Media and technology are inextricably linked to DH in India. Media is at a critical juncture of inquiry for DH, as are its concomitant industries.
