ABSTRACT

Digital humanities as an academic discipline studies and develops digital methods for researching humanities material, but in a wider understanding, also entails the study of digital media and their interrelation with culture and society. Video games today actively contribute to construct perceptions of values, identities, and in general, society, as in times of deep mediatization, actors obtain information from many sources. Game development and production practices are complex and highly reflected processes. Currently in India, especially “indie” (independent) gaming companies successfully develop games for international and regional audiences that are based on regional contexts. This chapter specifically introduces and discusses examples of Indian video games that make use of cultural heritage elements from Indian backgrounds. How is cultural heritage implemented, interpreted, and constructed in these games? And how are specific aspects such as history, art, and architecture depicted?
