ABSTRACT

India has more than a thousand museums, most owned by the government and others run by private trusts and individuals. The amount of art objects across these collections is innumerable, and there has been no specific attempt to list these, but it is estimated that collections with national museums range from two Lakh to five Lakh and smaller museums have a few thousand. In 2009 the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, took up a survey of various museums under its aegis and made an appraisal of their public programmes and infrastructure. The research drew up the Fourteen-Point Museum Reform; this chapter discusses its implementation. From among the fourteen points, the point on Multi-media, Audio-Visual and Guide Facilities encouraged the design, upgradation to digital, and introduction to museum-related activity and technical research blogs. The case of the Company Paintings is used to illustrate these attempts.
