ABSTRACT

The winds of change that swept almost all Middle East and North African countries in early 2011 allowed the emergence of new civil society actors in Morocco. Indeed, the February 20 Movement for Change that took the lead of activism in 2011 managed to achieve a number of reforms and changes namely at the political level. This chapter examines the dynamics and growth of civil society in Morocco from the pre-protectorate period to the post Arab Spring era. The chapter looks at the different phases of its development and change with some focus on the contemporary era. Based on the findings of my previous research on civil society in Morocco since 2006 and through following the new actors on the ground and through media, this chapter tries to investigate the dynamics of Moroccan civil society since the pre-protectorate era and the extent to which 2011 constitutional reforms have contributed to the strengthening of civil society's role and engagement in the process of change.
