ABSTRACT

A resurgence of interest in the use of peaceful nuclear explosions could lead to a proliferation of nuclear explosive devices and undermine current disarmament efforts. The willingness of states to cooperate in measures to limit the dangers which uncontrolled involvement in PNE activities would present for the international community will depend in part upon their perception of the potential value of PNE and of the risks associated with its development. This paper surveys the present situation with regard to the safety, technical feasibility and economic viability of peaceful nuclear explosion applications, and discusses weapon-related technical aspects.
