ABSTRACT

As the relations between the Nordic countries are positively peaceful and have been so for more than a century and as all of them are non-nuclear weapon parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the second objective would be by far the most relevant. The guarantee is the important issue to face, when preparing for a Nordic nuclear weapon-free zone (NNWFZ). An NNWFZ agreement include sea areas where no relevant nuclear weapons are permitted as well as other areas with a lesser degree of limitation. To avoid nuclear penetration of a widespread NNWFZ it will be necessary to establish a solid territorial body of the entire zone by including high sea areas adjacent to its land areas. One possible formula for the NNWFZ case that would avoid too many borderlines at sea is to incorporate in the zone the 200 nautical mile wide exclusive economic zones of the zonal states as they are defined in the new Law of the Sea Convention.
