ABSTRACT

Cargill is a company that is little known, despite the fact that it is the second biggest world trade agro and food corporation just behind Walmart and the world’s largest trader in agricultural commodities such as wheat, corn, soybeans, sugar, cocoa, palm oil, and rice. Cargill’s transformation into a powerful corporation has been based on industrial and commercial strategies, including the development of technologies such as genetically modified organisms, the use of subcontracting, and the creation of various mergers and joint ventures. The Cargill Corporation has sometimes been described as “faceless” in that it is not directly associated with any brand known to the general public and has always sought to keep a low profile. It nevertheless came to the attention of NGOs and researchers more than 20 years ago and has been the object of considerable criticism.
