ABSTRACT

The authors describe the advantages of “no appointment necessary” walk-in (WI) sessions. They highlight that WIs seize the moment, are effective, and are efficient. They also address common worries about WI/SST, including concerns about being overwhelmed, managing risk, paperwork, the absence of pre-assessment or screening, the lack of routine follow-ups, and issues that may arise if clients want something that the WI/SST service doesn’t provide. They note that WIs allow more services for disadvantaged minorities, discuss staffing arrangements, and invite readers to consider ways they could include an open access option within existing services.
