ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses various elements of Greenland's economy and labour markets. It deals with macroeconomics of Greenland and presents challenges for the overall economy. The book then examines that present economic situation of Greenland cannot be properly understood without an adequate understanding of its historical background. It also analyses the Greenlandic employment system by looking at Majoriaq, a frontline labour market institution with the thorny task of facilitating good matches among unemployed workers and labour-seeking employers. The book focuses on the Greenlandic labour supply by applying new, unique survey data and concludes that Greenland has a relatively low unemployment rate when applying the Labour Force Survey approach. It then focuses on the social security system as a whole and point to important structural and institutional barriers to labour market participation. The book explores gender-related issues connected to Greenland's labour market more in depth.
