ABSTRACT

Local and national governments around the UK have recently been launching tree planting initiatives, making now an opportune moment to assess the contribution of tree strategies to the success of urban forestry programmes. This chapter provides an overview of national and local tree strategies, with a specific focus on street trees. Guidance and, therefore, practice is highly uneven and presents a significant challenge when assessing them. As a standalone case, this chapter examines the policy context of concurrent street tree strategies in Sheffield, to explore how the strategic visions of the local authority and their contractor had to change in light of its controversial street tree management programme. This chapter closes with potential directions for future examinations of street tree strategies.
