ABSTRACT

As a profession, arboriculture and urban forestry management in the UK are still new, with the Institute of Chartered Foresters only receiving Privy Council assent to offer chartered arboricultural status in 2007. For a small growing sector, the challenge moving forward is to continue to be heard against bigger lobbying interests, to influence policy makers and to continue to hold the government to account when policy targets are not met. This chapter looks at street tree planting from a practitioner perspective and covers issues such as the need for better tree planting and care policies, both locally and nationally through the exploration of the example set in Sheffield, and two case studies that the author contributed to in Bristol.
