ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the metalinguistic knowledge that Andalusian speakers have about phonetic variation in Andalusian Spanish using a perceptual analysis. We investigate the metalinguistic knowledge of seseo, ceceo, jejeo and the distinction between sibilants. Methodologically, we distinguish between Sevillian, Cordoban, and Jerezano Spanish speakers’ representations based on perceptions and metalinguistic concepts in order to know if there are divergences between permanent knowledge and knowledge based on direct perceptions. Both results show that Andalusian Spanish speakers believe in a non-existence of a standard based on seseo for western varieties. This metalinguistic knowledge strengthens recent sociophonetic data on Andalusian Spanish.
