ABSTRACT

The self-studies reported in this chapter were conducted collaboratively in two countries: Portugal and Canada. Our focus is on the value of listening to student teachers and how we interpreted and responded to what we heard. Overall, listening and responding yielded positive responses from student teachers. Our goal in this chapter is to illustrate several ways of listening to students and the positive effects of that listening on the teacher educators and their student teachers. The pedagogy of teacher education is a major concern for those learning to teach: how they are taught matters, for they are always thinking about how they themselves will teach. We both believe strongly in the importance of making our pedagogy transparent by explaining our rationales and by explaining how and why we make changes in response to their comments.
