ABSTRACT

Eventually, pubic sociology should become as a need, from the field, actually from the public. However, we should look at it as such already now, as a vision and as an assumption for the future, when its effectiveness will be proven and recognized widely. The public – as different groups, sectors, organized category members and mainly those who are organized on the basis of unsolved problems – would and should ask sociologists to find solutions, as public sociology, by recognizing the changeable variables in their management. This article presents such examples from the Israeli experience, as they appeared much before it was called public sociology, but in the same spirit. We are emphasizing, following Kurt Levin, that a theory that is not clearly practical (and thus comes to be a set of tools for public sociology as a practice) is not a good enough theory. Such a suggested chapter in each published theory might be its correction. Additionally, we are offering in this article some insights about possible incentives, which might lead sociologists to be much more committed to public sociology, by minor structural changes in the academic procedures.
