ABSTRACT
In 1822, Fourier explained the phalanstery as a building designed to separate different social purposes. The centre was to be a ‘place for quiet activity,’ while the wings were to contain noisy workshops on one side and rooms for meeting visitors on the other. Children were to be housed separately in the mezzanine. In 1899, a community called the United Avondale Phalanstery was founded in the south of England. The men of the phalanstery were less careful to conceal their emotions than old-time folks in these early centuries. Eight decades passed away slowly in the Avondale Phalanstery; and day after day seemed more and more terrible to poor, weak, disconsolate Olive.
