ABSTRACT
This chapter inquires into whether the current maritime law liability rules are satisfactory in view of the risk profile of autonomous shipping. The current rules’ imposition of liability on a shipowner in case of maritime accidents are predominantly fault based. This makes good sense in traditional shipping where human decision making is at the forefront of causes leading to accidents. It makes less sense in the era of autonomous ships.
