ABSTRACT

Careful forensic assessment of trauma is crucial in civil and criminal forensic cases. Since trauma is rarely considered in the development and norming of most psychological tests and has rarely been a focus of the education or training of psychologists and psychiatrists, forensic evaluators must deepen their knowledge about the intersection of malingering and trauma to practice competently. In this chapter, we present a method of generating hypotheses, gathering data using tests that are appropriate for traumatized people, and using trauma-informed research to guide the interpretation of the multi-method data to answer the forensic question, “Is this true trauma or true drama?”.
