ABSTRACT
It is a tremendous honour to be invited to contribute to this Festschrift for Professor Samuels. I would also like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to share some of my own work. It is typical of Andrew’s generosity that he wished to use this collection to highlight the work of others. It is impossible to do full justice to his seminal scholarship and activism but I would like to make some brief observations on both topics as they relate to my PhD experience. I would also like to share some remarks relating to my personal experience of supervision.
