ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an innovative method for training students on Russian prefixed verbs of motion. Specifically, it examines new technology in the emerging fields of virtual reality and game-based learning to understand how to better enhance students’ comprehension of a difficult grammatical concept. The virtual reality game, Поехали!, allows students to train on the concept of verbal aspect in Russian prefixed verbs of motion in a visually realistic virtual environment. Moreover, it allows students to see the effects of their choices and receive immediate feedback on their choices. The chapter also outlines the results of a small-scale attitudinal study and provides a qualitative analysis of the data. While the prototype aims to instruct students on one specific complicated aspect of Russian grammar, the concept for this program is readily transferable to other languages and will have broad application in foreign language pedagogy.
