ABSTRACT

The academic discipline of archaeology and the administrative function of archaeological heritage management are twins that have developed at different rates. Archaeological heritage management may be deemed to have begun with the Swedish Royal Proclamation of 1666, declaring all objects from antiquity to be the property of the Crown. The end of World War II saw the beginnings of archaeological heritage management as an integral component of social and economic planning. The development pressures of the 1960s and the environmental movement of the 1970s had a profound effect on archaeological heritage management. The end of colonialism in the postwar period and the birth of new nations has seen the promotion of archaeological heritage management in a more positive sense.
