ABSTRACT

Geographically, Sri Lanka was located between the two major ancient empires of Rome and Peking, with a calculated sailing distance of approximately three months from either capital. Longitudinally, Sri Lanka lies almost on the equator, a promontory at the southern tip of the mainland of Asia. In 1978 the Sri Lanka Government requested Unesco to provide guidance and assistance in managing the archaeological sites in the historic regions of Sri Lanka, subsequently identified as the Cultural Triangle. The organization in Sri Lanka itself is based on a distinguished Board of Governors chaired by the Prime Minister. A steering committee has been set up for each of the six projects of the Cultural Triangle, intended to keep them on target in terms of the ten-year macro-plan and in terms of the annual micro-plan.
