ABSTRACT

Every generation gets the Stonehenge it deserves, as the merest glance at early illustrations of Great Britain’s most famous archaeological monument will show. Heritage Projects Ltd, a York-based company set up to develop the experience gained at thejorvik Viking Centre of presenting archaeology to a wide public, submitted to the Stonehenge Study Group and the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission (HBMC) a detailed scheme for the imaginative presentation of Stonehenge. Stonehenge is possibly the best-known prehistoric site in the world, attractive to, and capable of appreciation by, a far greater proportion of the public than any other British archaeological site. In presenting the HBMC’s proposals for Stonehenge, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, Chairman of the Commission, indicated that the HBMC philosophy was to provide facilities for those who were prepared to devote some time to a visit. Heritage Projects Ltd is a commercial company. Part of its philosophy is that presentation of the past need no longer be a total drain on the nation’s resources.
