ABSTRACT
I was influenced by a family acquaintance and also by the fact that at that time you either went straight into the army or you got deferment if you were a medical student. A senior boy at the school where I had been had set a precedent of going to Cambridge to study medicine and, with him in mind, I followed in his footsteps, with a bonus of not having to go immediately and do my National Service.
