ABSTRACT

It is a composite setting—downstage is the inside of a house with only a bench in the centre, and upstage there are music instruments. As the audience enter, there is traditional African music from a soundtrack. It is African celebration music. Just before the last members of the audience take their seats, enter Muntu and Thabo carrying a bag and two blankets. They look very tired from the heat of the sun. They drop down the bag and the blankets. Thabo inspects the house. Muntu sits on the bench with suspicion. He smokes a pipe which fills the room with smoke. They both take off their shoes. Then Thabo opens the small imaginary window downstage right. Afterwards he joins Muntu at the bench. After a moment of silence, Muntu plays an African drum very softly.
