ABSTRACT

The New Deal of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s administration granted funding toward the construction of buildings in Northwest Louisiana. There were more than sixty-nine buildings constructed in the parishes of Northwest Louisiana under the New Deal programs, and a review of nine of these structure types confirms their impact on the lifestyle of area citizens. Of the buildings in Northwest Louisiana parishes funded by the New Deal, only one type was for federal use-the post office. The buildings constructed in the five parishes of Northwest Louisiana, in conjunction with the New Deal programs and state and local governments, served many functions. Buildings constructed in Northwest Louisiana with New Deal funds established the standards for modem architectural styles that later graced area skylines and became a valued part of the region's cultural heritage.
