ABSTRACT

In the Literature Institute of Beida was a party branch operating under the Municipal Party Committee system of the Beijing underground party. In the autumn of 1926, two women students joined the party branch. Both were from Hunan and would have great influence on Wang Shiwei. One was the martyr Li Fen whom we have come to know through "Wild Lilies". She was Wang's first love and remained so for his whole life. The other was Wang's [future] wife, Liu Ying, who would undertake all kinds of hardship with Wang Shiwei and bear his children. Wang Shiwei and Liu Ymg were married in January 1930 in Shanghai and afterwards lived in a small apartment on Caishi Road. Wang Shiwei came from Hengchuan, Henan Province. His father led a hard life as a former provincial-level scholar-official in the Qing dynasty who later ran a school.
