ABSTRACT

Environmental Embedment Shapes community performances: whether environmental concerns trigger the need for community performance interventions, or whether built or social environments shape the form that this intervention takes. Environmental work in its broadest sense, then, has been a concern for community performance practitioners for a long time, and in many different places – from ceremonial mediators working with and between different living beings, to political activists, such as Greenpeace, finding theatrical means to draw public attention to environmental damage. The ‘environments’ discussed in this section are human, more-than-human, other-than-human, and the art practices the authors profile show community performance as a force acting upon the wider world, and through the world. They see community performance as an outgrowth of an ethical engagement with the world: acknowledging the multiplicity of influences, effects and relationships.
