ABSTRACT

This discography is a comprehensive listing of Byrd recordings published from 1995 to 2003 inclusive. It therefore supplements the same author’s “A Byrd discography” in Byrd studies edited by Alan Brown and Richard Turbet (Cambridge University Press, 1992), pp. 202–64, and “A Byrd discography supplement” in Brio (Vol. 33, No. 1, 1996), pp. 19–54. For an explanation of the order of entries, key to entries, and inclusion policy, which is consistent with the two previous Byrd discographies, see the introduction to the 1992 discography (pp. 202–4). One amendment to the order of entries has been made for this supplement. Five works listed in Grove as doubtful but in the main sequence of Richard Turbet’s catalogue (see above) appear here in the Alphabetical list of Latin works: Domine Deus omnipotens; Reges Tharsis, 5vv; Sacris solemnis; Sanctus, 3vv; Vide, Domine, quoniam tribulor. Also listed by Grove as doubtful, Out of the deep, 6vv, appears here in Other English Music, as it has been authenticated by Richard Turbet, “Postscript,” Annual Byrd newsletter 1 (1995): 4. The Lullaby [Keyboard adaptation] (EK 53) has been retained, as previously listed in Grove 6 as doubtful, though Grove 7 has changed its status to misattributed. Three new abbreviations appear in this supplement: ‘[ind]’ (no date) indicates it has not been possible to verify the issue or reissue date of a recording (in the former case the entry is placed after the dated entries); the other abbreviations designate the new recording formats of super audio compact disc ‘(sacd)’ and digital video disc ‘(dvd).’ It should be noted ‘(sacd)’ is a discrete format, incompatible with cd but ‘(sacd & cd)’ is a hybrid format with a cd layer. Where the supplement entry merely records a different format or catalogue number, usually the result of reissue, from an entry in 1992 and/or 1996, only the entry number is normally cited, 232though when additional information has come to light this has been added. Some corrected entries also appear with the suffix ‘[corrected entry].’ The assistance of Richard Turbet is gratefully acknowledged.
