ABSTRACT

The Lebanese culture amalgamates the European, Christian and the Arab non-fundamentalist Muslim values. The paucity of data on Lebanese women managers and the increase of women's professional development highlight the urgency for more research in this area. One of the main changes that Lebanon has undergone to eradicate gender discrimination in the workplace is the education of girls which has contributed greatly towards the economic and social development of Lebanese women. Women’s participation as managers and decision makers within the public sector is almost insignificant. In October 2004, for the first time, two women were appointed to the Lebanese Cabinet. The interviews covered a number of dimensions including personal and occupational demographics; family background; with a prime emphasis on gender-based, organizational and socio-cultural factors that related to the status and career experiences of women managers. Given the problems that women face in finding paid employment in Lebanon, female entrepreneurship is negligible.
