ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the labour force characteristics on women in Spain, followed by the progress of Spanish women pursuing education. It addresses the presence of women in decision-making roles in politics and corporate management, as well as data on female entrepreneurs and women’s involvement in small and medium enterprises in Spain. The reason that more women are prominent in this sector may be due to the fact that this industry is comprised of small, local, family-owned or entrepreneurial businesses. The university degree structure in Spain is significantly different from the Anglo-Saxon model and is currently in the process of changing. Diplomaturas are typically three-year university degrees and are most comparable to a four-year Bachelor’s degree. In comparing European Union averages in major academic fields, the percentage of European females enrolled in tertiary studies is more or less even with averages of Spanish females across most fields of study.
