ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by analysing the current globalization process in the context of the evolution of the international system of state. Placed within the framework, the impact of the globalization process on the 'South' or developing world will be analysed in order to explore how the process challenges the Middle East and North Africa region. The globalization process is undoubtedly challenging the state in many serious ways. Territorial sovereignty is being diminished on a wide range of issues, undermining the capacity of the state to control and protect its land and its people from outside influences. An important characteristic of the globalization process is its identification with free market economic rationality and multiple sources of authority. As such, the process is closely associated with an Anglo-American ideological premise of liberal capitalist origin.
