ABSTRACT

Non-governmental organizations (NGO) can be either national or international, and they include such private, non-profit organizations as Amnesty International, the Boy Scouts, Greenpeace, and the Congress for Racial Equality. The global partnership between the United Nations and NGOs has proved to be invaluable in enhancing the effectiveness of the Organization. Non-governmental organizations have provided a vital link between the United Nations and communities worldwide, building popular support for the aims of the United Nations and enabling policy-makers and common citizens to share concerns. NGOs are active throughout the world, implementing local or international projects, sharing information about the United Nations and helping to provide input for its programmes. Many NGOs are also vigorously seeking to participate in the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Giving proper attention to the relationship between NGOs and the United Nations will help it progress and develop in the manner required by the spectacular changes in today’s world.
