ABSTRACT

Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP) was one of the first high school mathematics curricula to try to embody the vision of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. The IMP curriculum is a 4-year college-preparatory sequence of courses designed for Grades 9-12. IMP places strong emphasis on probability and statistics, in part because of the increasing importance these areas have in the work place. Teaching techniques used in the IMP are designed to help students gain deep understanding of mathematical ideas, reason mathematically, and apply mathematics to solve problems. A higher percentage of IMP students than students in the traditional curriculum went on to take advanced high school mathematics after they completed 3 years of college-qualifying mathematics. The IMP students outperformed students in the traditional college-preparatory mathematics course on content emphasized in their curriculum and generally not addressed in the traditional college-preparatory mathematics curriculum.
