ABSTRACT

The key professionalization experience for the author was the idea that technology has the potential to help overcome traditional boundaries like language and distance among people, enabling many more of us to tell our own stories in ways that might be more understandable and accessible. Technology can be used, in other words, to carve out spaces that bring different kinds of people together for good purposes. This chapter highlights that it was the author's belief in such potential that was important to his professional development. It discusses ways to create consubstantial spaces within English studies for the purposes of creating greater diversity or highlighting the diversity already present. Diversity brings new perspectives, and new perspectives bring new ways to think about current practices and ideas.
