ABSTRACT

Duran defined communicative adaptability as a cognitive and behavioral “ability to perceive socio-interpersonal relationships and adapt one’s interaction goals and behaviors accordingly”. The scale appears to have strong concurrent validity. Social Composure and Social Experience are related to communication apprehension, Social Experience and Social Confirmation are related to loneliness, and the physically attractive are viewed as more communicatively adaptive. Criterion-related validity also appears good. College students’ perceptions of their roommates’ Social Composure, Social Experience, and Articulation influenced roommate satisfaction. Research has also attempted to establish construct validity. Although Duran extended the content validity of the earlier scale, the six dimensions of the current instrument still may not tap all dimensions of communication competence. Future research should involve more nonstudent samples and factor analysis to again test the stability of the factor structure.
