ABSTRACT

Involved interactants are aware of the demands of the interaction and respond to others appropriately, while the uninvolved are preoccupied with their own thoughts and concerns rather than their partner’s. The state version, used immediately following a conversation to tap involvement in that particular interaction, is available from Donald Cegala. Factor analysis has been used to examine the stability of the interaction involvement dimensions. Cegala’s more work has focused on construct validation, examining various verbal and nonverbal behaviors of those high and low in interaction involvement. The Interaction Involvement Scale appears to be a useful scale for measuring a general tendency toward, or the state of, involvement during interpersonal interaction. There are both cognitive and behavioral items in the scale, which is probably why the scale is related to both cognitive and behavioral predispositions. Reliability and validity data are good. Almost all studies havetested the scale exclusively on college students.
