ABSTRACT

The diversity in elementary classrooms across the United States is growing at a rapid rate. This diversity, which encompasses different races, cultures, religions, socioeconomic levels, abilities, disabilities, and learning styles, is a celebration of the differences that make up the United States. However, with this increase in diversity also comes the responsibility for classroom teachers to reach more students at a variety of levels. Although literature exists for each of these groups separately, teachers know that good teaching strategies benefit all learners. With that in mind, this chapter will focus on science education literature, instruction, and strategies that are specific to the English language learner (ELL), but 106when used in regular classroom instruction will benefit all students. Finally, learning science must incorporate the tools of science that include building literacy skills.
