ABSTRACT
In a famous scene from a British war novel, a British general arrives at a crossroads a few miles behind the front lines 1 . Troops moving in mile long columns converge on lorries mired in the mud, snarling the intersection. Units are breaking up. Radio communications are smashed, and reserve units advancing to the battlefront are miles from where the commanders want them to be. Everything is uncoordinated.
