ABSTRACT

Contention in Latin America between the two superpowers –the Soviet Union and the United States – has continued to intensify. In the economic field, the Soviet Union has in the last two years promised certain Latin American countries huge economic "aid" and trade and for the first time sold heavy ground military hardware to South America. Accordingly, the United States has strengthened its measures to counter Soviet expansion and penetration. Such frequent Soviet naval and air force presence in this area is at once an extension of its military activities closer to the United States proper and a display of force in its contention with the United States in Latin America. Confronted by Soviet military expansion and infiltration in Latin America, the United States has strengthened its military deployment along its eastern and southern coasts as well as in the Caribbean Sea and the Panama Canal Zone.
