ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates on some of the forms of life writing, while looking at the techniques involved in trying different approaches — such as travel writing, diary writing and dramatic writing. It looks at some of the techniques used in writing fiction that might be of use to the life writer, and continues to consider how biographical and autobiographical approaches might sometimes cross over. The chapter focuses on how one might go about producing particular versions of events. One event will often give rise to many different versions of what happened or what it was like, whether the different perspectives arise from one person over a period or whether they are the views various people hold of the same event. Life writing potentially treads the path between social history and personal reflection. The important thing is that the writer is motivated with regard to his or her subject.
