ABSTRACT

(1868–1933), German poet. Stefan Anton George was born in Büdesheim, a village near Bingen (his parents moved when he was 5 years old). His father was a landlord and became a fairly wealthy wine merchant in Bingen. His mother was the daughter of a miller from Büdesheim. George – like his elder sister and younger brother, who also became a wine merchant like his father – never married. The poet kept his room at the family house in Bingen until his death. Throughout most of his adult life, however, he lived abroad, including in London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Heidelberg, Basel, Kiel and Minusio, staying in boarding-houses or with various friends.
