ABSTRACT

Teacher assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning in the classroom. Teachers mark and review written work and other outcomes of the pupils. Through these activities they are continually finding out about their pupils’ capabilities and achievements. Teachers in a variety of oracy projects have developed models of assessment which involve collecting information about children’s oral work over a wide range of contexts and over a period of time, and which involve the pupils and teachers, and on occasion the parents, in discussing and reflecting on the information collected. Teachers will be required to make judgements about the overall levels of attainment achieved by pupils. Teachers have been encouraged to keep different records, and schools are required to issue reports on pupils’ work and progress which will no doubt draw on such records.
