ABSTRACT

The meaning of the term advanced reading skills is, in some respects, even more difficult to pin down than that of information skills. In the United States, as in England, there has recently been an increased interest in information skills, and before looking at the demands of the National Curriculum in England and Wales, it is worth considering why this should be. An emphasis is provided on information skills from the earliest stages of school language development, including attainment Levels 1 and 2. Throughout the National Curriculum, information skills are related not only to handling information from a wide variety of printed texts, but also to working with other media. Indeed, the very nature of information skills implies transformation of knowledge from one form to another for some purpose, and it is therefore very difficult to see how information skills could relate solely to one curricular area or attainment target.
