ABSTRACT

By the middle of the 21st century, ‘minorities’ will comprise nearly one-half of the American population (O’Hare, 1992). However, examples of America’s ‘melting pot’ are hard to find at the neighbourhood level, where a pattern of racial and ethnic segregation has been the rule. Will the US become a nation of co-existing, co-operating groups sharing ample resources, or will it become an even more segregated society with heightened tensions between diverse groups?
