ABSTRACT
Formerly we thought that North America and Australia were the continents of immigration and that Western Europe was one of emigration rather than immigration. Meanwhile we know better. Although the proportion of the West European population in the world is systematically declining, Western Europe is now confronted with net migration. In addition, for the years to come it is expected that extensive flows of immigrants from Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia will settle in Western Europe.
